ISU Head Football Coach Denver Johnson. Prove it on the field, don't waste our time and yours
by making unfounded allegations about an opponent. Can you say buh-bye? How about you're
fired? Because that's what you should be hearing over this one.

NIU may have had
access to ISU play book
By BRYAN BLOODWORTH
Pantagraph sports editor
Illinois State football coach Denver Johnson
admitted Tuesday there is "probably validity" to
reports that his offensive schemes may have turned
up in DeKalb prior to the Redbirds' 52-0 loss to
Northern Illinois earlier this month.
One of Johnson's former Murray State assistants,
who apparently was upset about not being brought
along to ISU, allegedly handed Johnson's Murray
State play book over to the Northern Illinois
coaching staff before the Sept. 9 game, The
Pantagraph has learned.
Using similar offensive strategies, ISU gained only
207 total yards and suffered its worst defeat since
1959. NIU also intercepted four passes, including
three in the first 19 minutes.
"I just don't want to be accusing anybody of
anything I can't substantiate," said Johnson, who
emphasized he was not accusing NIU of
wrongdoing or making excuses for his team's
lopsided loss. "But someone told me that I was
basically kind of hatcheted a little bit (at Northern)
by a coach.
"Obviously, there are a couple of coaches down
there that I did not bring with me. The basic premise
is that they (Northern) got a lot of help out of
Murray (State).
"It was very obvious to me at Northern that they
had an extraordinarily insightful game plan against
us. I heard those same rumors as well and kind of
put two and two together. It is very disappointing to
me, but I think it is a distinct possibility -- maybe
even a probability."
Johnson talked about the reports in response to
questions from The Pantagraph. He declined to
elaborate to avoid pointing fingers at the NIU
coaching staff.
"I have knowledge of stuff that I believe to be
truthful, but it was told to me in confidence and I
just don't want to break that confidence," Johnson
said. "I'm just not prepared to say everything
publicly that I believe to be factual unless I can
substantiate it some way."
Northern Illinois sports information director Mike
Korcek said he hadn't heard of the reports.
"But we all know coaches talk with coaches and
they have friends who have friends," said Korcek.
"The game (outcome) surprised the heck out of me,
but I think those reports are a little overrated."
Johnson said he didn't want it to appear he was
passing the blame for his team's performance at
Northern Illinois.
"I don't want to appear to be a sour grape in the
deal ... but obviously Northern had us skunked up
pretty good," said Johnson, who admitted the turn
of events has forced the Redbirds to change their
offensive approach to some degree.
"If we do have someone out there torpedoing us,
then we need to try and inoculate ourselves against
it a little bit," Johnson added. "It has forced us to
change things because you never know where that
play book might end up."
Indiana University President Myles Brand. You lost a great asset to your university, and a good
basketball coach over nothing.
